London (AP) — Pursuing a career in dance is no easy feat, and the new Hulu reality series ‘Playground’ captures that struggle authentically.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Playground dance studio in Los Angeles—a hub for renowned hip hop choreographers and instructors—this show dives deep into the highs and lows experienced by dancers chasing their big break. ‘Playground’ offers a raw, behind-the-scenes look at the dedication and drama that defines their journey.

The challenges faced by dancers are very real,” shares Kenny Wormald, co-owner of Playground and a seasoned dancer and choreographer. “With intense competition and constant pressure, this show really highlights those pivotal moments. I believe it truly captures what it’s like in the world of dance.

This week, British TV’s beloved dance competition ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ has made headlines amid troubling allegations of backstage bullying involving the professional dancers.

Playground’ doesn’t shy away from the drama at its Melrose Avenue studio, putting every clash right in the spotlight. But it’s not just about job disputes or romantic rivalries—there’s much more to the story.

With stars like Tinashe and Megan Thee Stallion making appearances, the show, launching on July 26, is on the hunt for the freshest new choreographers and dancers.

Hip hop superstar Megan Thee Stallion is joining the ‘Playground’ series as an executive producer.

‘We had a huge audition for her upcoming projects, including music videos, tours, and shows,’ Wormald shared. ‘Having her involved with the show is incredible.’

Wormald chatted with The Associated Press at Playground’s London studio, which opened last September. He and his family made the move to the U.K. for this exciting new chapter.

He mentioned that while the idea of a London-based show has been considered, there’s just ‘less drama’ in the British capital compared to the vibrant scenes of Los Angeles.

He actually prefers the quieter vibe—although he mentioned that Robin Antin, co-owner of the studio and creator of The Pussycat Dolls, really flourishes in the midst of all the dramatic personalities.

Wormald is confident that the show will inspire young dancers by highlighting the steps they can take to reach the heights of the successful performers featured in ‘Playground.’

“His advice for anyone dreaming of a dance career is to find a studio where you can learn from the top professionals. It certainly paid off for Wormald—after taking classes with Justin Timberlake’s choreographer, Marty Kudelka, he ended up joining Timberlake’s 2007 tour.
