On Monday night, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced that he is withdrawing from the race for the vice presidential nomination alongside Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
In a post on X, Cooper expressed his strong backing for Vice President Harris’ presidential campaign, saying, ‘I’m confident she will win and I was honored to be considered for the VP role. However, this isn’t the right moment for North Carolina or for me to join a national ticket.’
Cooper further stated, ‘From the start, I’ve believed she has an exceptional pool of candidates to choose from, and we’ll all work hard to ensure her victory.

‘Shortly after his announcement, he joined a ‘White Dudes for Harris’ Zoom call but didn’t address his withdrawal from the VP consideration. Instead, he focused on rallying support for Harris, emphasizing, ‘Our country needs Kamala Harris now more than ever, and we hold the key to making that happen.’
Cooper had already shown his support for Harris’ presidential bid earlier. On July 21, he made a formal endorsement, stating, ‘Kamala Harris is the right choice for our next President. Having worked with VP from our days as Attorneys General, I’m confident she has the skills to defeat Donald Trump and lead with both thoughtfulness and integrity. I’m excited to campaign for her and help secure victory for Democrats across North Carolina.’

Cooper, a previous director of the Majority rule Lead representatives Affiliation, was viewed as areas of strength for a for Harris’ 2024 ticket, with the possibility to assist the Leftist faction with making advances in key swing states.
Had Cooper joined Harris’ campaign, North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson would have stepped in as acting governor while Cooper was on the trail, according to constitutional rules.
Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor, is vying to succeed Cooper, who is unable to run for a third term due to term limits.

Among the rumored candidates for Harris’ running mate are Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
Harris is anticipated to reveal her VP pick by August 7, just ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which is set to start in Chicago on August 19.
